Pain Management Options For Headache

When there’s a case of headache most people want to end this torture as soon as possible and the most obvious choice for pain relief are typical painkiller medications. Today there’s a huge variety of over-the-counter and prescription medications effective in eliminating headache, and choosing one depends on the severity of pain and the options available at your local pharmacy. All the medications are advertised as providing a unique way of relieving pain, but is that really so? However, according to different market studies there’s not much difference in the way most analgesic medications eliminate headache. Some patients are more susceptible to one type of drugs, while others have allergic reactions to another one. But in the end it all boils down to the actual effectiveness of a drug and its price. Because they are virtually all the same. The products are also claimed to have a specific effects for specific types of pain, for example back pain or headaches. But in most cases these medications provide a general analgesic effect that will eliminate any painful sensations regardless of where they are coming from.

So again, it all boils down to the personal preferences a person has regarding the drugs. Besides the usual pills that have to be taken orally, there are also topical gels and cremes that you can use directly on head to relieve pain. Such products are usually based on potassium dichromate and white bryony that act as the main ingredients for pain relief. And they are claimed to be quite effective by those who have used them. Alternative headache pain management options However, some people have negative reactions to typical drugs and even over-the-counter solutions are very hard to use, what’s the solution? Fortunately there are some alternatives to painkiller drugs like Tramadol that you can easily employ when having a headache. These options include acupuncture, massage, chiropractic sessions, and yoga. Acupuncture is a very popular traditional Chinese practice that is used to relieve a wide range of health conditions for thousands of years. Acupuncture involves application of very thin needles to specific points on the skin that are believed to regulate the flow of vital energy in the body. And knowing the points for relieving headache one can easily relieve this type of pain. However it is still recommended to go to a professional acupuncture practitioner to get adequate help. Massage is an intuitive and the easiest option for any person suffering from headaches, especially tension-induced headaches.

Tension in the neck or shoulders is often the reason for headaches, so massaging these regions really helps relieve the unpleasant sensations without using drugs like Tramadol. Chiropractic sessions are used to relax the body in general and ease the tension in neck and shoulders, providing pain relief effect for headaches as well. This is especially useful if a person suffers from migraines and other forms of chronic headaches. Yoga is a very effective practice for eliminating tensions and relaxing the body in general. Many people who have started doing yoga report having headaches far less often then before employing this technique. Yoga is known to help relieve pain associated with other conditions as well so it’s a very broad-range pain management method. Regardless of which type of alternative headache pain relief method you choose, talking to a professional physician won’t do you any harm. Learn about the safety of each method for your individual case and choose the option that is the most effective for you.

Your Options For Treating Impotence

Erectile dysfunction is a problem that most men are well aware of. Almost every man will have problems with obtaining and sustaining erections at a certain stage of his life, some earlier while others later. And the most crucial thing to remember with erectile dysfunction is that you have to get help as soon as the problem transforms from occasional to persistent. The earlier you take action the better. And after you have defined the causes of your impotence and consulted with your physician, you have to consider your options for treating the condition. The last decade has seen serious developments in the field of erectile dysfunction treatments and effective medications are not the only thing that was improved and taken on a new level. Psychological therapy Erectile dysfunction is known to be caused by various psychological problems in up to 90% of all cases. It can be anything from work stress to depression, varying from simple causes to complex situations with very profound impact. In such a case, going to a psychotherapist or relationship counselor is much better and more effective that using medications. Psychological problems can be eliminated by simple conversations, relaxation techniques and group therapy that get in touch with the psyche of the person, rather than influencing bodily functions. And in many cases it’s more than enough to get men back on track. Vacuum pumps Vacuum pumps have been around for decades and there are countless variations and improvements of the simple concept behind them. Every vacuum pump is a cylinder that the patient has to put his penis in. The valve mechanism sucks out the air from the cylinder and creates vacuum, which in turn stimulates blood flow into the penile shaft. It’s the same mechanism that drugs like Viagra use only that it acts from the outside on a purely physical level. After the desired effect has been achieved, a special ring is placed at the base of the penis to sustain the erection Medications This type of ED treatment has seen much of a stir in the past decade mainly due to the advent of Viagra. Today there are many other medications from different manufacturers as well as generic Viagra formulations available for a lower price and the market is blooming. The mechanism of action in such pills is basically the same as with penis pumps only that it stimulates the blood circulation on the physiological level within the body by blocking certain enzymes. Injections Injections are also a form of medication administration only that they are required in cases when pills don’t help anymore. The drug is administered directly to the penis before the intercourse and has lower interference with other substances in the body if compared to ordinary pills. Hormonal treatment The most common hormonal issue that may cause erectile dysfunction is the low level of male hormone testosterone. If that’s the cause if impotence, your doctor may prescribe you with testosterone replacement therapy that requires frequent analysis and precise dosage. Thorough medical supervision is a must. Prosthetic solutions and surgical procedures In some cases only surgical operations and prosthetic solutions can help restore sexual functions. It’s usually the last resort in cases when other treatment options couldn’t help at all or there are severe restrictions against using medications for the patient.

Erectile Dysfunction – Overcome Myths to Find Right Diagnosis and Treatment

Erectile dysfunction is characterized by the recurring or inconsistent inability to achieve or retain an erection that is satisfactory for the purpose of sexual intercourse. Most cases of erectile dysfunction can be treated successfully but it is essential to understand this common male sexual condition and bust some of the prevalent myths associated with this condition.

Myths surrounding erectile dysfunction

  • Myth – You should accept erectile dysfunction as a natural part of the process of ageing. Fact – Erectile dysfunction is quite common in older men, but it is certainly not a ‘natural’ part of the aging process. It is a medical condition that needs to be resolved like any other disorder.
  • Myth – You should not worry about getting erectile dysfunction if you are under the age of 40. Fact – Erectile dysfunction can affect you at any age. Increasingly, younger men are developing conditions that are known to contribute to erectile dysfunction, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.
  • Myth – Erectile dysfunction can be effectively treated with oral medications. Fact – Oral medications work for most men, but not everyone can take them. Talk to your doctor for a prescription for oral impotence medications such as Viagra.
  • Myth – Herbal products can help treat erectile dysfunction effectively. Fact – The efficacy and safety of herbal impotence treatments has not been clinically studied or proven. You should consult your doctor before commencing any erectile dysfunction treatment.

Diagnosis of erectile dysfunction

Your doctor may need to conduct a variety of tests in order to determine whether you are suffering from erectile dysfunction. This is because erectile dysfunction can be caused due to a variety of reasons, and the specific cause needs to be identified before the treatment begins. Your doctor will need to perform a thorough physical examination and review of your medical history. You will also be asked to provide details of your sexual and personal history. This may sound intrusive but the diagnosis depends on how honestly you answer the doctor’s questions. Some of the tests prescribed to diagnose erectile dysfunction include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC test)
  • Kidney and liver function tests
  • Lipid profile
  • Thyroid function test
  • Blood hormone studies
  • Urine analysis
  • Duplex ultrasound
  • Nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT)
  • Vasoactive injection
  • Penile biothesiometry
  • Dynamic infusion cavernosometry
  • Cavernosography
  • Arteriography
  • Bulbocavernosus reflex
  • PSA test

Best erectile dysfunction treatments

  • Making crucial lifestyle changes can often help in resolving erectile dysfunction problems. These changes include adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, as well as cutting back on alcohol, smoking and recreational drugs.
  • Couples who visit a sex therapist or counsellor may find the key to treating erectile dysfunction by addressing the underlying psychological issues that may be responsible for this condition.
  • Prescription erectile dysfunction medications can be prescribed by your doctor if erectile dysfunction has been diagnosed. These medications are known to cause mild to severe side effects and should never be taken for recreational purposes.
  • Vacuum pumps, also known as penis pumps, offer short term results for treating erectile dysfunction and for increasing penis size.

You can choose an appropriate treatment depending on the severity of your condition and the efficacy of the results.

Vaginal Infections Natural Remedies And Home Care

For a woman, infection of any kind in her sexual areas can lead her to suffer heavily. In such cases, when immediate medical attention is sought, as soon as the symptoms are noticed first, many potential complications can be avoided. Some bacterial infections, such as Trichomoniasis and Vaginosis, do not respond to home care or other such easily available medications. They must be taken care of by a physician who would use antibiotics according to the conditions. On the other hand, yeast infections and home care can go well together, as yeast infections may respond to home techniques or over-the-counter medications. Once you are diagnosed as having the yeast infection, and if your physician agrees, you can try the simply home care techniques. However, to be on the safe side, any such infections should be best left to the physicians.

When a woman is suspected with some kind of vaginal infection, certain tests are conducted to verify the onset. Based on the symptoms, vaginal cultures and results of the urine test, the specific organism that is causing the infection is identified and the treatment goes accordingly. The treatment would entirely depend on the form of vaginitis, duration of the infection, severity of the condition, pregnancy, and depends on whether the infection is recurring. This is the safe approach compared to home care or trying the over-the-counter medications.

If the yeast infection reoccurs, and you are sure of it, you may try one course of vaginal medication, Miconazole or Monistat for instance, that you can find as an over-the-counter medication. Your using such medication may help you only if you are sure of having the yeast infection. Some women wrongly use such drugs to treat other kinds of infections that would turn them into a kind of resistant infection. Once it becomes a resistant infection, it would be very difficult to treat it. It is, therefore, highly advisable to consult a doctor if you are not sure of the type of the infection. Therefore, it would, be a better idea to be careful while using any home care techniques.

You should know that in mild cases of yeast infection, your success rate with such medication is significant, as about 75-90 percent results are seen with the use of the nonprescription drugs. The form of medications can be creams or suppositories.

While trying the home care techniques, you should follow the instructions that come with the specific medications. In case you notice any undesirable symptoms, such as increase in irritation, discontinue the medication. Moreover, you should also be careful while using such medications as home care for vaginal infections or yeast infection, when you feel the drug is not working even in a week’s time, or when you are pregnant.

As other home care techniques, some women try vinegar douches, eating more yogurt for acidophilus, or they take topical anesthetics or antihistamines to get relief from the symptoms. In any case, you have to pay much attention while dealing with such issues.

Medical Treatments For Psoriatic Arthritis

Doctors who treat patients with psoriatic arthritis are quick to state the alternative therapies that can heave a huge impact on the condition. These include the addition of exercise to daily life, reduction of alcohol consumption, quitting smoking and reducing weight, if necessary. However, these treatments may not help to relieve all the symptoms associated with psoriatic arthritis. When alternative therapies and life changes are not getting the job done, there are medical treatments that can offer a great improvement on the quality of life.

NSAIDs

NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These medications are available over the counter for purchase without a prescription and in prescription strength. In most cases, doctors will begin treatment with over the counter varieties as these tend to have fewer potential side effects. Pain, swelling and difficulty with movement can all be greatly reduced with the use of NSAIDs.

DMARDs

DMARDs are disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. When pain and swelling are very severe, DMARDs may be used. DMARDs can come with a higher risk of side effects and are not available over the counter. When taking these medications, it is important to keep track of any side effects you may be having and report them promptly to your physician. DMARDs are unique, in that, two of the medications are used to treat psoriasis as well as psoriatic arthritis. These are cyclosporine and methotrexate.

Another form of DMARD is called a biologic. These medications work to reduce the immune system response to the psoriatic arthritis. Whenever the immune system is suppressed, the patient is at an increased risk of infection that can be life threatening. These medications are often used only as a last resort if not other alternative or medical treatment is effectively curbing the symptoms.

Therapy

Keeping the joints moving is an important treatment option for any arthritic condition. Physical, occupational and massage therapy can help to reduce the pain, stiffness and swelling associated with arthritis. Patients who have sustained joint deformation as a result of the arthritis may be fitted with braces to hold the joints in proper position during therapy. These braces often help relieve the pain associated with the condition.

Surgery

If joint condition has been compromised to the point that bone is scratching on bone, joint replacement surgery may be performed to improve the quality of life. This treatment is not common, but is an option for patient with both traditional arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. As both psoriasis and arthritis are incurable, the surgery is only a temporary treatment that will reduce pain for a given length of time. Aging patients may choose to opt for surgery if the joints have deformed to the point where they are immovable even if pain is not the major symptom.

Each of these medical treatments offers an additional step toward symptom management, but none of these treatments are prescribed as a standalone option. Doctors have quickly learned the power of alternative therapies and lifestyle changes on the effects of psoriatic arthritis on the body. Most often, medical treatment will be prescribed in conjunction with alternative therapy and changes.

Sleeping Aids

The most common prescription Sleeping aids approved for use in treating insomnia are as follows: benzodiazepines (such as temazepam, estazolam, and others); the newer, non-benzodiasepines (such as zolpidem [Ambien,Ambien CR], Zaleplon [Sonatal], and eszopiclone [Lunesta]; and the melatonin receptor agonist ramelteon (Rozerem). These three Sleeping aids work best when the individuals who are treated for insomnia are diagnosed by a physician and follow up treatment is regular. It is not uncommon that with these medications, some form of therapy may be needed. For example, Sonata has a one hour duration of action, so it can be used for middle-of-the night awakenings. Giving the relatively level “therapeutic playing field” among the hypnotic sleeping aids, the cost to the patient should be considered when selecting a medication. Of course, the list of approved medications in the patient’s health plan much be considered. The medications usually have a low incidence of side effects, and a low abuse potential. For example, according to a published study in the American journal of Medicine in 1996 in which they analyzed various outcomes in 170 adult patients with long-standing sleep-disruptive disorders who were treated with nightly benzodiazepine therapy (usually clonazepan) for at least six months, and often for many years.

Among these patients, 146 (86 percent found that this therapy completely or substantially controlled their Sleep problems, 8 percent had adverse effects (such as morning sedation ) requiring Sleeping aids changes, 2 percent had relapses of alcohol or chemical abuse requiring hospitalization, and 1 percent at times misused their medications. Other less common side effects include morning, “hangover”, dizziness, problems with balance, memory, or confusion. Zolpidem, zaleplon, and eszopiclone are imidazopyridine medications that interact with a benzodiazepine receptor in the brain. Their advantages are rapid absorption, lack of active metabolites, and low risk for side effects or abuse. Zolpidem has been extensively studied, with an excellent therapeutic profile during nightly use for up to six months, although in our experience it can be used safely on a nightly bsis for well over a year in patients who are carefully followed. The usual dose is 5-10 mg. at bedtime, with doses with doses of 15-20 mg at times being used. Zaleplon is an ultra-short-acting agent that is effective in promptly restoring sleep in patients having problems with nocturnal awakenings. The usual dose is 2 or 3 mg at bedtime. The following antidepressant agents at times can also be effective in controlling insomnia: doxepin or amitriptyline (10-50+mg), trimipramine (25-100 mg), imipramine (10-75+mg), and trazodone (25-100+mg). Doxepin in particular has clinical research backing its use in insomnia, with the other agents having far less research backing. Also, these agents carry risks of untoward effects.
