Aromatherapy in Pregnancy

People get very concerned about the use of aromatherapy and essential oils during pregnancy. Some, including some aromatherapists, even advise not to use any essential oils at all. I personally think that is a bit extreme, and also a great pity, as many essential oils can be quite useful in helping the prospective mum through this time. There are a number of reasons that the area of aromatherapy and pregnancy has become the subject of so much concern. And often people are left not knowing what, if anything they can use. Essential oils listed as “Not to use in Pregnancy” fall into 3 basic groups – 1. Oils which are toxic or otherwise dangerous and should be avoided at all times, even when not pregnant. These include bitter almond, arnica, boldo, broom, buchu, calamus, brown & yellow camphor, cassia, chervil, cinnamon bark, costus, deertongue, elecampane, bitter fennel, horseradish, jaborandi, melitotus, mugwort, mustard, oregano, pennyroyal, dwarf pine, rue, common sage, santolina, sassafras, savin, southernwood, savory, tansy, thuja, tonka, wintergreen, wormseed, wormwood. 2. Other oils which require caution for anyone using them (again not just during pregnancy) include ajowan, aniseed and star anise, some types of basil, bay, white camphor, carrot seed, some types of cedarwood, cinnamon leaf, clove (leaf and bud), coriander, cumin, eucalyptus, sweet fennel, hops, hyssop, juniper, lemongrass, nutmeg, parsley, black pepper, spanish sage, tagetes, tarragon, thyme, tuberose, turmeric, turpentine, valerian. 3. Commonly used oils which are normally safe but may have adverse effects when pregnant. These include angelica, basil, birch, calamintha, cedarwood, celery seed, citronella, clary sage, cypress, jasmine, labdanum, lovage, marjoram, melissa, myrrh, nutmeg, parsley, peppermint, rosemary, yarrow. In addition there are some oils which are usually to be avoided in the first trimester, particularly if there is a history or risk of miscarriage, such as roman chamomile, geranium, lavender and rose. The first category should always be avoided, but in the main are not readily available anyway. The second should only be considered under the advice of a professionally qualified aromatherapist and generally used in very limited amounts and/or for a limited period of time. But why do some oils only become a risk during pregnancy? Well, some of these oils are emmenogogues and have a stimulating effect on the uterus. Some affect the hormones or have too strong an effect on a particular organ or system of the body. We also do not yet know to what extent oils used by the mother may affect the developing foetus, so any oils which may be too strong for the child should be avoided. This amount of caution is also required because the quality of essential oils can vary widely in the marketplace. But under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist, great benefits can be gained by using some essential oils during pregnancy. Another thing to bear in mind is how & how much oil you use. Never take essential oils internally. Always, but always, dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin. Never apply them neat to the skin. If you are pregnant, adapt any recipes by cutting down the number of drops to child sized doses, around half of that for an adult. This softens the effect and also takes account of the fact that when pregnant, a woman’s sense of smell is often more acute, so full strength may seem overpowering. For example if a recipe suggests 5 drops in 10 mls of carrier oil, then use only 2-3 drops. Less is often more in aromatherapy! Essential oils used in vaporiser will carry much less risk than any applied directly to the body, whether in a carrier oil, in a bath or as a compress. But still err on the side of caution regarding how much you use. Some useful and safe remedies for pregnancy – * Nausea – put 2-3 drops of ginger or spearmint oil on a tissue and inhale. * Oedema (swelling of hands and/or feet) – put 4-6 drops of one of the following oils in a foot or hand bath (sweet orange, geranium, grapefruit) and soak * Indigestion – dilute 1 drop of spearmint essential oil in 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil and massage into the abdomen in clockwise direction. Other oils that are generally safe to use include, lemon, sweet orange, mandarin, frankincense, lavender, sandalwood and tea tree. Always ensure that you are using true essential oils rather than synthetic or fragrance oils. See my article on choosing essential oils for more information. If you have a personal or family history of miscarriage or your have been advised that your pregnancy is in any way fragile, please seek advice from a professional aromatherapist regarding your particular situation before using essential oils. Professional advice is a good idea for anyone contemplating the use of aromatherapy but especially so in pregnancy. And always let your health practitioner, doctor, midwife or obstetrician know about anything you are using or proposing to use. This information is meant as general advice. Please consult your health practitioner or a qualified aromatherapist for advice on your specific situation.)

Anxiety Fear And Possible Treatment

Anxiety fear is an intense feeling of fear produced to an individual despite the absence of any real threat. This type of irrational fear affects even adults and situations that could produce severe levels of anxiety fear can result to panic attack. Therefore, those who suffer from this are recommended to respond or look for proper ways of dealing with the situation since it is potentially dangerous. Aside from that, the person suffering from anxiety attack lack the ability to think clearly or lose connection with reality.

To deal with anxiety fear, a person must realize that he or she has a choice in the way they respond to stimulus of fear. Knowing this will immensely alter and reframe the way you look at fear. Now, you will be able to gain power over your fear instead of being controlled by it. Because if not, then fear always finds a way to create negative impacts on your brain and the way you perceive things. Look at fear in a different light, so that it does not produce the same anxious feeling as it usually does on you.

Symptoms of Anxiety Fear

How do you know you have anxiety fear? Of course, it is important to identify the symptoms for this condition because only then can you make the proper diagnosis and take steps to improve your condition. Here are common symptoms shared by people with anxiety fear:

•    intense sweating
•    feeling of nausea
•    breathlessness
•    incontrollable shaking
•    dry mouth
•    heart palpitations
•    loss of touch with reality
•    inability to think clearly or focus

Treatment Options for Anxiety Fear

As with how you respond to fear, you also have a choice on treatments that will help reduce the symptoms of anxiety fear or get rid of it altogether. Therefore, you are able to respond to situations logically instead of letting the fear consume you. Here are possible options to consider:

Hypnotherapy

The objective of this treatment is to reprogram your subconscious min, which is a contributor in creating those irrational fears. One you have altered that program in your brain, then symptoms are also consequently minimized. If you have any reluctance when it comes to the control of your brain programs, then you have to be assured that hypnotherapy is a safe method. Before you know it, you have let go of some brain programs that produce the high level of anxiety associated with your irrational fears.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

This method will serve to interpret how you produce your idea of reality. From an analysis of your own constructs, psychological professionals will suggest new ways in which you can create your perspective of the world. This will help you get rid of any form of thoughts that produce anxiety fear.

Energy Psychology

Like with the two treatment methods above, this one is a rapid and effective method. It is built around the same foundation as acupuncture, minus the needles. Instead, this method can be dubbed as emotional acupuncture wherein you change your behaviors and thought patterns, since they have been recognized as effective means to get rid of unnecessary fears in life.

Exercises to Combat Fear

One of the best ways to combat fear is to stop and take time to connect with your body. You can try following the steps below and find yourself free of any anxiety fear:

•    Sit quietly or lie down while you keep your eyes shut.

•    Starting from your feet and working your way upwards, scan your body for sensations.

•    Take time to pause in each area of your body and give notice to the different sensations they undergo.

•    Then, proceed to the center of your body – at the abdomen area or around the navel. Then, breathe into it.

•    Try doing this technique at least once a day and you will notice you will feel relaxed after doing it. Indeed, meditation has been pointed out as one of the most effective methods of healing and you can do the same with anxiety fears.

10 Easy and Natural Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Are you looking for acne solutions that really work? The good news is, whether you’re a teenager or an adult suffering from acne, you don’t have to live with it. Here you can find 10 super easy and effective ways to get rid of acne.

1. Do not pick, press or rub your pimples. These actions actually increase the sebum production and rupture the membranes below your skin. The infection and sebum will spread underneath your skin and cause more pimples. Also, you risk increasing the chances of leaving scars on your face.

2. Wash your face twice a day using a mild soup. It is even better if you can buy sulfur-based soap especially for acne. If your skin is too oily, use a soap with benzoyl peroxide. Do not use rough sponges, brushes, or anything similar on your face. You shouldn’t, however, over-wash your face because it will actually stimulate your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum which will increase your acne.

3. Check if it is because of the food. For many people, food allergy can cause very serious acne condition. You should avoid eating too much oily and spicy food. Recent studies have shown that acne can also be caused by milk which contains hormones as well as seafood with relatively high levels of iodine. If possible, cut down on those foods. Other foods you may consider avoiding are: sugar, dairy products, deep-fried food, meat, nut butters, etc. On the other hand, it is believed that green vegetables, vegetable fuices and foods rich in zinc can help alleviate acne condition.

4. Drink more water every day. “Eight glasses of water a day can keep acne away.” says Jennifer Thoden, a respected acne expert. The reason is that water can carry waste material out of our body and it really helps heal and prevent acne flare-ups.

5. Do not wear makeup if possible. Makeup products can clog your pores, cause more blackheads and pimples. If you have to wear makeup, make sure it is water-based. Be sure to clean your makeup brushes regularly and cleanse your skin before you sleep.

6. Do not use oily products. Avoid products such as hair pomades, intense oil-based facial moisturizers, and oily cleansers.

7. Keep your face clean. Do not rest your chin on your hands or constantly touch your face. Regular shampoo your hair and keep it off your face, especially when you sleep.

8. Exercise moderately as it helps in blood circulation and eliminataion of toxins.

9. Stay stress-free. Studies have shown that stress not only worsens acne flare-up, it also worsens the overall skin condition. Talk to your friends, listen to your favorite music, or take a walk in the park. There are many things you can do to be stree free.

10. Get Sunshine and fresh air. Sunshine stimulates vitamin D in the body, an essential vitamin for healthy skin. Fresh air and sunshine can also reduce stress (tip #9) and increase oxygen to the skin. Don’t get burnt in the sun though. Burnt and heavily tanned skin forms a layer on the skin that doesn’t exfoliate quickly enough and can lead to blocked pores.

Medical Benefits From Essential Aromatherapy Oils

When essential aromatherapy oils are used specifically for the medical properties of the plants involved, it would be to your benefit to learn about medical research that goes into making oil blends. Today, you can find many great companies that take pride in offering the public only the highest quality oils possible to ensure the essential oils work appropriately for the specific reason you are buying.

In addition to the plant used for making oil a key component but plants are also vital to our survival. Throughout history, experts have discovered that plants have a direct link to a person’s well being, physically, emotionally, and mentally. To understand value that plants offer, scientists and researchers have conducted hundreds of studies and the knowledge gained intriguing.

Look at prescription medicine as a prime example of how plants are used. It is estimated that as much as 30% of all legal drugs in America are based on plants. This shows that even pharmaceutical makers realize the importance of plants but with only 700 plants being used for essential aromatherapy oils, we can see that experts have just begun to tap into the true benefits that plants offer.

Even plants used today for making essential oil have been studied in depth by leading universities and research firms, each looking to identify all the therapeutic values offered. To accomplish this, every part of the plant is used and interestingly, each plant offers something unique. In other words, the roots, leaves, flowers, stems, bark, and even seeds have something of value that can be used to make essential oil.

While finding some of these plants was easy, others were challenging, requiring experts to trudge up muddy hills, down into deep values, through heavily canopied jungles, and wilderness areas all over the planet. Just as with animals or creatures under the sea that have yet to be identified, we can only imagine the vast number of plants that have never been seen by the human eye.

Using essential aromatherapy oils is not just for the wonderful fragrance, although this is certainly one appeal. The plant properties of these oils can also promote health such as easing stiff joints, encouraging fertility, and eliminating headaches. Oils used for aromatherapy offer other medical benefits, being able to kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi. With new problems associated with the flu a current part of our society, people can use various oils to purify and sanitize the air, which means homes and offices become a safer place to be.

One of the benefits of buying quality oils from a reputable company is that the person creating blends is qualified. Some blends can be extremely complex to make and in fact, with so many plant components, one product could be made of hundreds.

Then, when you consider the high concentration level of essential oils, coming up with the perfect balance of low, medium, and high notes, using the right plant and plant parts, as well as distillation process, it takes someone with serious knowledge. The outcome is you end up with essential aromatherapy oils that are safe but also effective.

Peppermint Essential Oil is made by distillation of the flowering herb and is normally a pale yellow or greenish coloured liquid. When inhaled it can reduce a fever, relieve the feelings of nausea and vomiting, improve a person’s digestion as well as soothe the respiratory system of the body. There have been various studies performed which show the oils ability to improve a person’s sense of taste and smell as well improve concentration levels and mental clarity in those that have inhaled the oil. There are several ways in which peppermint essential oil can be used either by inhalation, rubbing on to the reflexology points on a person’s feet, diffused into the air (spray) or drops poured into a therapeutic bath. Below are provided some ways in which peppermint essential oil can be used. Inhaled as steam for congestion relief. What you need to do is put a few drops of the oil into a large bowl of hot water and then you should place a towel over your head, lean over the bowl and inhale the steam that is rising from it. Motion Sickness. Just place a few drops of peppermint essential oil on a tissue and inhale. Headache. Put a few drops on to a cool wet towel and use as a compress on the forehead or you could massage it into the neck, back, temple and/or forehead (however do not forget to dilute with a carrier oil prior to placing on the skin). Digestion. Place several drops of diluted oil (dilute with carrier oil) on to the stomach and massage it in. Or else you could just rub some pure oil onto the bottoms of your feet. Breath Freshener. Just place several drops on your tongue. Therapeutic Bath. Put several drops of the diluted oil into a tepid bath and it will help to relieve stomach problems, nasal congestion, headaches or menstrual cramps. However if you do not have any essential oil then get a cloth bag and fill with several handfuls of dried or fresh peppermint leaves and put in the water while you bathe. It should be me remembered that caution should be taken when using any essential oil and they should be diluted with a carrier oil when being used externally to prevent any adverse reactions. Certainly a skin reaction may occur if the dosage used is excessive and it should be kept away from eyes at all times. However, below are some precautions which you must take when you are using peppermint essential oil. Be careful when giving it to children under the age of 5 as the menthol can cause them to react by choking. Do not apply this oil to the faces of infants or small children. At no times should peppermint essential oil be ingested unless it is under professional supervision. Women who have a history of miscarriage should use peppermint essential oil with caution. Certainly large amounts of this essential oil may trigger a miscarriage and the same precautions should be taken by women who are breast feeding their babies. There are a number of side effects associated with using peppermint essential oil and these are:- If it is incorrectly used peppermint essential oil can cause dermatitis and other allergic reactions. For some people taking enteric coated capsules may have a rare reaction to the product such as skin rash, heartburn, slow heart rate and muscle tremors (and therefore this product must be avoided). Large ingested doses of peppermint essential oil may result in a person’s kidney’s becoming damaged. The Sweet Smells of Aromatherapy

Smells and scents influence all the aspects of our life. They play an important part in important facets of everyday living such as food, hygiene, clothing, and so forth. In fact, there is an art that deals with the impact of strong scents and smells on our moods. This art is more popularly known as Aromatherapy. It has been practiced as far back as a few thousand years ago. Ancient Egyptian frescoes relate how ancient Egyptians used Aromatherapy to calm their senses and to add some spice into their lifestyle.

Aromatherapy was also popular during the Medieval Ages. It has been reputed that the Crusaders used a combination of myrrh and frankincense to keep their tired troops in an excited state of constant preparedness. This tactic was also reputedly used by Napoleon to maintain the alertness of the French army. There are other records of princes of generals who have utilized this art to win battles or to scare away the opposition.

A recent Animal Planet program highlighted the influence of Aromatherapy on the animal kingdom. In this program, the producers listed out ten animals with the vilest scent in the entire animal kingdom. The skunk proved to be the smelliest critter in the whole world. Anyway, to return to the subject of Aromatherapy, bad smells are also a vital part of the art of scents and smells. Similar to the concept of the yin and yang that balances the forces in nature; both good and bad scents need to be studied in order to determine a scent that has the most balanced impact on a person.

The battered and stressed out population of today?s modern era consider Aromatherapy as their lifeblood. Stress and worries have increased along with the material comforts that have been developed through technology. Most people do not have the inclination or the time to indulge in the old fashioned methods of relaxation. Aromatherapy provides people these days with a simple and economical solution for stress.

The Many Aromatherapy Benefits Used Around The World

Aromatherapy Benefits can sometimes be helpful in a mild, gentle way in reducing stress, helping with mood, improving alertness, or helping to relax or induce sleep. However, one has to be sensitive to aromatherapy essential oil treatment, and not too many people may be sensitive enough to notice a clear benefit.

Aromatherapy Used for Alertness And Energy

Researchers from West Virginia have found that getting a whiff of pleasant odors periodically while driving increases alertness, reduces fatigue, and even lowers drivers’ anxiety and frustration. By stimulating the nervous system, peppermint and cinnamon odors enhance motivation and performance, increase alertness, and decrease fatigue among athletes and clerical office workers. The effects of these odors on drivers, researchers had 25 college undergrads sniff peppermint, cinnamon, or a non-odor control for 30 seconds every 15 minutes during simulated driving conditions. We all know that driving can be stressful and these findings were extremely informational and interesting. As time goes on there are numerous aromatherapy benefits.

Essential Oils Used

There was a study done to investigate aromatherapy benefits and not just limited to enjoying nice scents. This study was done to test the effects on patients with depression, arthritis and pain. The essential oils used for this study were;

? Lavender

? Marjoram

? Eucalyptus

? Rosemary

? Peppermint

? And mixed with carrier oils such as Almond, Apricot and Jojoba oils

Aromatherapy benefits significantly decreased both the pain score and the depression score of the experimental group compared with the control group. Findings suggested that aromatherapy benefits can be useful for patients suffering from these conditions.

Benefits to Cancer Patients

Fatigue is one of the most distressful symptoms described in patients with advanced cancer. Patients received aromatherapy that was accompanied with foot soak in warm water containing lavender essential oil for 3 minutes, followed by reflexology treatment with jojoba oil containing lavender. Combined modality treatment consisting of aromatherapy, foot soak, and reflexology appears to be effective for alleviating fatigue in terminally ill cancer patients.

It is obvious that the benefits of aromatherapy are now being found to be better for us in mind, body and health. As the research continues to evolve and more proof is found the market will continue to grow, not only for consumers but also for the medical industry. The doctors of Holistic Medicine were already trying to let us know of these benefits but many people did not believe what they were conveying to us. Now people are starting to reap the benefits of aromatherapy and pay more attention to what others have to say.

Anatomy of an Anxiety Attack

Anxiety attacks are normal body reactions – coping mechanisms – against different stressors and distressing predicaments. In other words, these are chemical, physical and emotional reactions that are elicit by fear, apprehension, or shock.  These reactions also cause a  “fight or flight” response. Based on scientific studies, people automatically react to stress or stress-inducing activities by either making a confrontational stance or making a decision to avoid the stress.

Pressure can come from an emotional problem in a relationship at home, demanding tasks and deadlines at the office,  the dread of a forthcoming test, or the clamor for a game-winning performance in a championship game.  All these can product constant anguish and even anxiety attacks if a person is not able to cope effectively with the stress.  A person that is undergoing an anxiety attack often experiences a feeling of numbness or tingling, shortness of breath, dizziness, heightened palpitations, chronic sweating, chills, hot flushes, and  nausea.

Extreme levels of anxiety can produce serious ill effects on one’s physical and mental health.  Anxieties can actually a hinder or adversely affect a person’s the day-to-day activities.  Aside from the possibility of leaving a person emotionally depressed and physically weak, anxiety can also cause a person lose the ability to make a rational decision.  It is not uncommon to hear of cases of people with severe anxiety who have lost their jobs and failed in their relationships.  For these people who have become victims of anxiety attacks, life has become a mere matter of survival — bereft of happiness, fulfillment, and health.

Some people can cope with depression and anxiety.  But for a significant number of people who do not have the ability to cope with stress and anxiety, the only means to regain their life is to undergo therapy and, if necessary, take anxiety medications.  These anxiety medications, if accompanied by therapy conducted by professionals, offer relief and possibly permanent protection from the debilitating effects of stress and severe emotional distress.   Anxiety medications often vary in the dosage and desired effects.  However, what is common among these anti-anxiety medications is the ability of these drugs to  suppress unnecessary chemical and emotional surges.  Controlling these chemical and emotional surges allow a person with anxiety to regain a sense of peace and tranquility.

Anxiety medications, also known as anxiolytics, are prescribed to treat the different  symptoms of anxiety. For example, Bensodiazepines are prescribed to treat the short-term and disabling effects of anxiety.  These drugs are take effect in a person’s central nervous system, which is the reason why a certain degree of sedation occurs in a patient using the medication.
Non-bensodiazepines, however, are used to control the serotonin level in the body. Serotonin is essential to the body for regulating anger, temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality, and appetite. Though they are proven to be less effective than bensodiazepines, the serotonin-regulating effect of this type of anti-anxiety drug also helps a person to achieve a relaxed state.

While these medications offer relief, people must still practice a little caution before taking these anti-anxiety drugs.  These drugs cannot totally remove all symptoms of anxiety.  Of course, these medications cannot resolve an emotional or psychological problem that is actually the origin or source of a person’s anxiety attacks.

Anxiety what is it and what brings it on

Anxiety can be defined as emotions which are typically negative in nature. It will often consist of fear and worry, and some organisms may even experience physical signs such as nausea or chest pains. Anxiety is a complex emotion, and is composed of a number of different elements. Some of these elements are somatic or cognitive, and the body will prepare itself to deal with an external threat. The heart rate speeds up, and the blood pressure is increased. The various muscles in the body will also receive elevated levels of blood. At the same time, the functions of the digestive system will slow down.

People who have anxiety will generally have a sense of dread. A number of voluntary and involuntary processes will take place in the body, and the goal of these processes is to get the organism away from the source that is causing it to have anxiety. Anxiety is an important emotion, and is designed to increase the survival rate of organisms. In humans it appears that anxiety comes from the hippocampus and amygdala, two regions of the brain. When a person senses bad odors or tastes, there will be a large amount of blood flow which will be present in the amygdala. The evidence also shows that medium levels of anxiety will be present in this situation as well.

Based on these studies, it appears that anxiety is designed to keep humans and other organisms from eating food or objects that may be harmful to their well being. While anxiety is normal, a person that has excessive amounts of it may have what is called an anxiety disorder. In extreme cases, people with anxiety disorders may have strong cases where they are terrorized. Anxiety disorders are broken down into phobias, panic disorders, generalized anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorders. Someone who is suffering from a phobia will have an abnormal amount of fear of a specific object or situation. People who have phobias tend to have extensive imaginations, and realize that their fear is often irrational.

When a person suffers from a panic disorder, they will have extreme panic attacks, and may have dizziness or breathing problems. These attacks will typically reach their height in about 10 minutes. Generalized anxiety disorders are common, and effect a much larger portion of the population. It is prevalent in both men and woman, and is characterized by long periods of anxiety that are not related to any specific object or situation. With the obsessive compulsive disorder, the individual with have an obsession or compulsion when it comes to specific types of behavior. People who suffer from this disorder will see the need to do something obsessively in order to reduce their anxiety.

Many people who have this disorder need to be extremely clean, and are afraid of germs. To reduce their anxiety, they will wash their hands numerous times in a single day. There are two primary methods that are used to help those who are suffering from anxiety, and this is either therapy or prescription medications.
